GSA Musical Theatre Singing Examinations and Diplomas

In 2011 MT4Uth will begin to work in conjunction with Guilford School of Acting as they launch their new Musical Theatre Singing Examinations. This will provide accredited exams for MT4Uth students who have been selected by the company for training.
Accreditations will range from Grades 1-8 through to Diploma and Fellowship levels.
With an international reputation as a centre of excellence, GSA graduates appear in every West End Musical, UK and International Tour.
GSA’s reputation for Musical Theatre training is highly respected worldwide. These examinations will test ability at all levels and encourage students to prepare and engage in the development of their craft to the highest specialised standards. GSA are the only Board of Musical Theatre Singing Exams who provide specialist singing examiners offering comments on technique as well as performance.
There is no other Graded Singing Examination Syllabus which:
• is devoted exclusively to the Musical Theatre repertoire
• guarantees to provide examiners who are specialist in Musical Theatre
• gives musical theatre performers the opportunity to demonstrate integration of their other skills with their singing
• has an impression mark for overall performance
• is provided by an institution with close links to the Musical Theatre profession at the highest level
Ross Campbell, Head of Singing & Music at GSA, as well as Chief Examiner for these new exams looks forward to working with MT4Uth on an ongoing basis, and welcoming as many of you as possible to this new Board of Exams.

Tribute to Vernon Mound in The Stage:
Vernon Mound, who died from cancer on his 56th birthday, led two unique institutions: Music Theatre 4 Youth, Ireland’s only cross-border performing arts education charity, and the musical theatre department at Gothenburg University in Sweden, the only such course in Scandinavia.
Born on August 27, 1954, he studied at the University of London and began his career as a stage manager, subsequently becoming a staff director, in which capacity he was an associate director of Carmen Jones in the West End, and revived Turandot for the Royal Opera Company
in 1992.
He combined careers in opera and theatre in the
professional, educational and amateur sectors in the UK, Europe and the United States.
His first directing credit was for The King and I in
Australia. His opera career began with Opera North, a springboard that led to productions for Opera Nova, Opera Viva, Holland Park and New Sadler’s Wells Opera and South Yorkshire Opera, often designing his own sets. In all, he directed almost 200 productions.
For a time, he led the education departments of Opera North and Scottish Ballet, was head of acting for the Royal College of Music and Stella Mann College in London,
and associate director of the National Youth Music Theatre and Youth Music Theatre UK, for whom he commissioned and directed new musical theatre. He was a regular guest director at the Arts Educational Schools, London.
In recent years, much of his work was focused on Northern Ireland and Scandinavia, where he directed West Side Story and Showboat for Innsbruck Opera, Martin Guerre for Odense Opera, Sweeney Todd in Karlstad, the Swedish tours of Miss Saigon and Les Miserables, and productions for Norwegian National Opera.
Recent productions for Gothenburg University included A Little Night Music, Carousel, Titanic, and Guys and Dolls. It was during rehearsals for Sunset Boulevard with Gothenburg Opera that he fell ill, and died on August 27. Artistic director Lise-Lotte Axelsson described him as
“an extremely passionate, enthusiastic visionary”.
